Jacob Draft 4: White Supremacy.

After winning a draft with a rancid RWu control deck, Matt and I fired up another 8-4.

Pack 1, Pick 1:

 My Pick:

Artisan is an excellent win condition, I think that overrides the good token makers P1P1.

Pack 1, Pick 2:

My Pick:

Artisan goes better in a red deck than a blue deck due to the token making ability.

Pack 1, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Rancid pack so I took team Ari.

Pack 1, Pick 4:

My Pick:

I think umbra is enough better than invoker to potentially end up in an awkward RW deck.

Pack 1, Pick 5:

My Pick:

RW control baby!!!

Pack 1, Pick 6:

My Pick:

Another solid white card.

Pack 1, Pick 7:

My Pick:

Oust is better in the control deck this is turning into than escort.

Pack 1, Pick 8:

My Pick:

You can't smite if you cant block.

Pack 1, Pick 9:

My Pick:

This card seems ok in a control deck.

Pack 1, Pick 10:

My Pick:

Attention!

Pack 1, Pick 15:

My Pick:

I guess I'm white control splashing whatever red removal I get.

Pack 2, Pick 1:

My Pick:

Invoker isn't at its best in a control deck with only a few guys, but still is good enough not to branch colors.

Pack 2, Pick 2:

My Pick:

Good for blockers or letting me cast Artisan.

Pack 2, Pick 3:

My Pick:

More invoking.

Pack 2, Pick 4:

My Pick:

The cache bar is open.

Pack 2, Pick 5:

Pack 2, Pick 7:

My Pick:

I like the plan this deck is going towards.

Pack 2, Pick 8:

My Pick:

Don't want my invoker to get killed.

Pack 2, Pick 9:

My Pick:

Get out of my draft!

Pack 2, Pick 10:

My Pick:

Is this card really this bad?  It has always seemed fine when I have played it, yet it always goes late.

Pack 2, Pick 15:

My Pick:

The deck has a solid game plan and some good removal, I really want another way to win or two, removal as always, and some more CA.

Pack 3, Pick 1:

My Pick:

I have some good answers to both big attackers and small utility guys.

Pack 3, Pick 2:

My Pick:

There's another win condition.

Pack 3, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Hmm, removal, CA, and a win condition in one.

Pack 3, Pick 4:

My Pick:

I'll have a gin and tonic please?

Pack 3, Pick 5:

My Pick:

Probably am not going to play three of these, but I don't feel like hating the battlement.

Pack 3, Pick 6:

My Pick:

Big blocks.

Pack 3, Pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 3, Pick 8:

My Pick:

No free splashes for you!

Pack 3, Pick 9:

Pack 3, Pick 10:

My Pick:

Deck is filled, so I took the board card instead of more big blocks.

Pack 3, Pick 11:

My Pick:

Nice, this is actually a deck that really wants the vial.

Pack 3, Pick 15:

Deck:
11 Plains
6 Mountains
2 Flame Slash
2 Oust
1 Smite
2 Guard Duty
2 Puncturing Light
2 Wall of Omens
2 Survival Cache
1 Brimstone Mage
2 Dawnglare Invoker
2 Makindi Griffin
1 Angelheart Vial
1 Mammoth Umbra
1 Emrakul's Hatcher
1 Ulamog's Crusher
1 Artisan of Kozilek

I debated whether umbra was worth playing with only really 6 real targets, but I figured it was fine enough to turn a flyer into a fast clock or to block.

R1G1:  He's RG ramp.   I keep plains, mountain, smite, wall, light, slash, invoker on the draw.  He plays a turn 2 treespeaker while my wall draws oust.  I oust it on 3 and play another wall after he casts sporecap spider.  .His green invoker get's slashed and I play my own invoker which gets spawning breathed when he replays the treespeaker.  I play another invoker which get's lust for wared. He plays pelakka wurm, and I rip mammoth umbra like a champ and play it on invoker and after taking a hit from the wurm, smite it next turn along with playing brimstone mage.  He plays hatcher and takes another hit from invoker down to 13.  He however plays jaddi lifestrider and goes back up to 31 with all the tokens he has accumulated.  I get a hatcher of my own, but he boar umbras his sporcap spider to make it awkward for my invoker, and his battlerattle allows his lifestrider to attack through my walls.  I draw my 6th land so I trade 2 tokens for my umbra's life and attack him to 19.  I figured that I needed to rip land land or oust and keep attacking or his guys would eventually get through.  Eventually I have to trade umbra plus slash for umbra and his lust for war is turned back on.  I die after playing a couple of not for value caches.  I have to ping my own dawnglare and his tokens get through when he draws broodwarden.  I really needed to draw land plus artisan to win from that position or at least both of us draw blanks so brimstone could mow down his army.

R1G2:  I keep light, duty, slash, umbra, and 3 mountains by accident on the draw.  I snap kept before I realized there were no plains, but I guess it was ok since I have the slash and have 11 plains in the deck.  His treespeaker gets slashed on two and I play a freshly drawn brimstone mage.  I level on 4 with my freshly drawn plains and umbra it on 5 since he is stuck on three forests.  He draws his mountain and plays wildheart invoker but is no match for my 5/6 brimstone.  I don't attack into untapped mana and just play wall and sit back on pinging.  He plays broodwarden and gets to 7 mana to heat ray my umbra, and I take some damage to save my wall to chump later.  Brimstone gets fully leveled and we both are at 11 as I mow down his invoker, but he lust for wars my brimstone.  I die to trading pings, so I just guard duty my own guy and sit on my hand of smite, guard duty and puncturing light.  Smite deals with broodwarden, and I eventually draw Artisan which slowly grinds his guys and land away.  He does have a lifestrider with a boar umbra on it but I have the oust to finish off the game.

R1G3:  I mull on the play into griffith, invoker, omens, cache and two plains; pretty much the nuts for this deck.  My wall is matched by his Tajuru Preserver and I cache.  He boar umbras his guy and I chump with wall so my cache rebounds for a card.  I really like this position, my deck has tons of ways to deal with umbraed guys for value.  I play griffith and have drawn vial so I seem good. He adds a bear umbra to his guy which is fine but I really need to draw my answer soon.  I take this hit down to 17 and he plays wildheart invoker with his extra mana.  I have my 5th and 6th land drops so I can vial then next turn draw and play whatever I draw.  I chump preserver and take it from the invoker down to 11 from a freshly played battle-rattle.    However my draw step and vial draw are both lands so all I can do is play invoker to chump.  However, his bear umbra mana allows him to activate invoker and kill me.

While this is not a deck strategy I have ever tried, it seemed solid and I feel like it was better than the result of losing in round 1.  Especially losing to umbras I was well set up to deal with.  Oh well that's life, as always comment below.

P1P3: I actually like Wrap in Flames quite a bit in this format. While I never play decks that need the falter effect, the ability to kill spawn tokens or x/1's like Lin-Slinger or Dawnglare Invoker has been very good for me. Bombardment is a card I only take this early if I'm already committed or forcing, ie pick 1 and 2 Broodwardens.
