Kai Draft #1 (8-4)

 Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Consuming Vapors is the strongest card in this pack. Induce Despair requires a sufficiently costed creature to do anything, while Vapors is excellent against all creatures of all sizes and particularly umbra'd up ones. It's lackluster against spawn token decks but its upside is well worth a first pick. Much less "all in" than picking Guard Duty or Aura Gnarlid.
  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

This pick was probably wrong. Gloomhunter is the strongest on-color pick but is rather lackluster in the format as there is an abundance of fliers with greater than 2 toughness. We don't have enough levelers for Champion Drake yet, so that's out. The pick is between Sea Gate Oracle, Wall of Omens, and Totem-Guide Hartebeest. The Hartebeest is strongest in a vacuum but I prefer having strong auras first before picking enablers. The Oracle is about as strong as the Wall and U/B is a stronger combination than B/W.
  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Simply the strongest card available. Good with Consuming Vapors and Vendetta. Sticking to colors isn't that important this early in the draft, especially since the only white card is Wall.
  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Just way better than anything else. Will be looking for signals as to which of U or W to be in as the draft progresses.
  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Should not be in the pack. White is obviously open.
  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Must be nice? Is.
  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

White is definitely WIDE open. This was the only white card in the pack to begin with.

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

At this point we have very strong white, 2 very good black cards, and a Mnemonic Wall. I go into pack 2 pretty assured I will be base white and looking to expand on black and possibly splash blue.
  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Certainly not exciting, but don't have the tools for the splash on Heat Rayk. Besides, with decent removal already and 2 finishers in the invokers, it's important to pick up solid creatures, especially those with presence in the late game.   Pack 2 pick 2:

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Again, taking the leveler over the Drake. Though this does put the count at 2.
  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Hatedraft in case I get a Domestication or another Narcolepsy or Guard Duty later.
  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Very late.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

This pack has both a removal spell and a card advantage generator in Last Kiss and Soul Cache. Cache has a chance to be very good in our B/W level up deck. However, Student of Warfare is just unfair in the early turns and can win the game without any support. It is imperative to not pass these cards when they are on-color.   Pack 3 pick 4:

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Gloomhunter is always going to be fine. Thought Gorger is insane against decks without a way to remove him without killing him ala Guard Duty or Narcolepsy. A 4 mana 6/6 or bigger is hard to beat. He rewards careful play. It is stronger to play out reasonable spells then use him to add another threat while "filtering" the last few cards in your hand.   Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 10:

Very late pick, and very good with our package of Mammoth Umbra, Narcolepsy, and Guard Duty.   Pack 3 pick 11:

Round 1:
My opponent was put under pressure from levelers early both games. He had weak defenses and his Domestication on my Caravan Escort was answered back with Consuming Vapors which also brought back card parity on the rebound.

Round 2:
Game 1 My opponent concedes on turn 2 on the draw to a Null Champion. I think he kept a 1 lander and missed.
Game 2 I misplay and don't hold back a flier against a 4/4 Champion Drake when I am otherwise ahead on board. He has the Regress and I die.
Game 3 I get Dawnglare Invoker active but his Sphinx of Magosi allows him to draw Puncturing Light to take it out the turn I go all in on leveling up Null Champion to level 4. I couldn't beat Regress or Domestication at the point in the game and he could always play blockers in his Second Main Phase so I felt I had to chance the Puncturing Light since his Soul's Attendant would make the long game unwinnable.

What happened in your games? And was this an 8-4...there's no way that vendettas and invokers should go that late

Invoker is really not close to as good in draft as it is in sealed. Games end before 8 mana especially in White and often when you hit 8 it is one shot from tokens that Fog almost as well.
