Jacob Draft 1: Punts of the Eldrazi.

So deciding I was done reading about Inguinal Hernias for the night, I got Kai and we fired up an 8-4.  My previous experience with this format has not gone well, haven't made the finals of any of my five Rise drafts.  Lets see what happens here.

Pack 1, Pick 1:

My Pick:

Wurm, Ray, or Manticore?  I went with the Manticore because it seems to have the biggest blow out potential, but I could see someone taking the Wurm and ship the red cards.

Pack 1, Pick 2:

My Pick:

I was questioning RW as a color combo (once again i'm not experienced at this format at all so please criticize in the forums), but anyways knight is the best card and it's early so I just went for power.

Pack 1, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Vomit, choice between two fairly powerful but all in cards that probably aren't as good in RW (Ironic foreshadowing), I took the leveler card in the color of the Knight.

Pack 1, Pick 4:

My Pick:

Ok removal is ok removal, and I should end up with flyers to punch through the man on guard.

Pack 1, Pick 5:

My Pick:

Haven't seen a red card since first pick so I hedge bets for the UW leveler archetype.  In retrospect I probably should have just taken smite (more foreshadowing), medeocre removal is still removal and games I lose in this format are usually to decks with too much removal or guys I cant kill (Insert results oriented, small sample size, bias, blah blah).

Pack 1, Pick 6:

My Pick:

So much for:
1.  Seeing no red cards.
2.  RW levelers having no synergy.

Pack 1, Pick 7:

My Pick:

Don't know about this pick, memories has the most upside if I get some instants in the next couple of packs (also if I had taken smite). Also, battle rampart doesn't seem very good in this deck and I probably can get some bad two power two drops later.

Pack 1, Pick 8:

My Pick:

Nice evasion guy plus fat ass.

Pack 1, Pick 9:

My Pick:

Doesn't seem like vent has potential in this deck so I took the better blocker.

Pack 1, Pick 10:

Pack 2, Pick 1:

Emakul!  All things being serious took the larger upside card and now I can start slamming all levelers.

Pack 2, Pick 2:

My Pick:

Welcome to pack 2 sponsored by Ipecac, I could have kept the small chance I splash blue by taking regress but the wall is ok although not for a second pick.  This doesn't seem to be a crusher deck.

Pack 2, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Ding!

Pack 2, Pick 4:

My Pick:

So awful, I take domestication because it is by far better than anything in the pack, but with no fixing red would have to go off the edge for me to have to switch to blue.

Pack 2, Pick 5:

My Pick:

Like the fresh smell of cadaver fluid (can you tell I'm a medical student yet?).

Pack 2, Pick 6:

My Pick:

Once again I don't like bad two power guys in this format so I take the speculative card.

Pack 2, Pick 7:

My Pick:

I don't quite know about this card yet, it seems like it would be mediocre but last week someone singlehandedly won a match against me due to it so I guess it has it's day.

Pack 2, Pick 8:

My Pick:

Have I mentioned how much this pack sucked (invoker aside).

Pack 2, Pick 9:

My Pick:

The hits keep on coming.

Pack 2, Pick 10:

My Pick:

Dubs! Can't lose.

Pack 2, Pick 15:

My Pick:

I'm going to seen some serious levelers this pack to make this deck passable (or just draw invoker plus eight lands every game).

Pack 3, Pick 1:

My Pick:

Step 1!

Pack 3, Pick 2:

My Pick:

This pick I do not know.  On the one hand I need levelers and the time makes outrider a nice beater, on the other hand elemental is a better card (though he isn't going to be that big in this deck).  I hoped the outrider would table.  I only had one enchantment to support the totem guide, so I figured the outrider would be the better of the two in this deck.

Pack 3, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Now we're getting somewhere.

Pack 3, Pick 4:

My Pick:

Man I love escorts...

Pack 3, Pick 5:

My Pick:

I possibly should have taken the repel but to cast the manticore plus white levelers I think this was fine.

Pack 3, Pick 6:

My Pick:

Two escorts in one night!

Pack 3, Pick 7:

My Pick:

Seems fine in this deck.

Pack 3, Pick 8:

My Pick:

Get to the air.

Pack 3, Pick 9:

My Pick:

Should have taken the umbra probably.

Pack 3, Pick 10:

Glad I got one of these.

It's late and I don't feel like remembering my decklist and can't find the file folder (i'll post it later) but the build was pretty straight forward.

R1G1:  Opponent is GUR (I dont know which is the splash).  I lead with an escort and knight, he plays aura gnarlid.  I level a few times winning the race over his snake umbra, then he drops boar umbra which I would lose the race to if I did not have six lands and a manticore in hand.

R1G2:  My early Knight is flame slashed, and he goes to the oracle and provides both crab and eel protection (apparently the oracle is at sea).  My Outrider in the time of heroes holds it off and I take minimal damage when he regresses it foiled by a heat ray on the subsequent level up.  Aura gnarlid comes down for him, however he gets put on guard and dawnglare teams up with hyena to put the game away a few turns later with some lord help despite me forgetting what crab umbra does and going to 3 for no reason.  The lord humbles the oracle once again proving why Greek mythology dyed out years ago.

1-0   2-0

R2G1:  I mull to 6 and am under knight beats early, but draw my own knight and with hyena protection hold off his flying army.  His guard gomazoa prevents me from attacking but eventually I draw dawnglare invoker and seem to have the game in hand.  This assumes I play reasonable magic. I let my five power soulsurge run into his mnemonic wall and get smited despite having a kor-line slinger sitting there doing nothing (I didn't know he had the smite but still an awful play).  This gives him time to draw his invoker and then his sphinx draws him into oust which wins the game.

R2G2:  I have many levelers and much time for heroes but am stuck on 4 lands and he draws enough guys and tempo cards (kor-line slinger, smite, oust, repel into darkness) to allow him to get to cast his sphinx and win the game.

1-1    2-2

I should have at least gotten to a game 3 round 2 but his deck was probably better and I needed to draw my bombs because my 10-22nd cards were worse than most other decks.  Oh well par for the course for me in this format.  Let me know what I did wrong in the forums.

I think p1p2 mammoth umbra is better than knight. It wins games on its own, and goes on pretty much anything. I don't think knight is on the same level. Pun intended.

Would've taken value deer over soulsurge for sure.

I enjoyed the medical humor :)

Personally, I would rate Wrap in Flames higher than Smite. I was always an Ember Gale fan.

Wrap would have been good in my final deck, but at the time of the pick I didn't know I was definitely aggro and smite can be good in both aggro and control while wrap is mediocre in many decks.

Wrap in Flames isn't Ember Gale. Ember Gale was way better in the format it was in as well.
